Iconic des_ark

Zegota's triumphal homecoming at the Hive on Sunday was a seminal moment for the globalized hardcore band's fans. It was a moment to savor for me as well.

I couldn't help noting to myself, however, how great a performance des_ark gave.

As its fans know, des_ark is singer/guitarist Aimee Argote and a rotating cast of collaborators. This was the fifth time I've seen Argote and des_ark play in Greensboro and it just keeps getting better and better. Comparisons inevitably do a disservice to the artist, but I can't help myself.

Any gutsy, uncompromising woman artist you can think of — Ani DiFranco, Janis Joplin, PJ Harvey, Cat Power — Argote has the same essential core of creative emotive power. I could compare her guitar sound to Jimmy Page, notwithstanding her punk-minimalist approach. And in terms of posture and stage presence, does anybody else see Pete Townsend?
