Latin King leader files for Greensboro City Council seat

Jorge Cornell (seated at left) appeared with the Rev. Nelson Johnson (standing) last month to call for the disbanding of the Greensboro Police Department's gang unit.

The inca of the North Carolina Latin Kings would like to serve on the Greensboro City Council. Jorge Cornell filed with the Guilford County Board of Elections today to run for an at-large seat on council.

Some background on Cornell here and here.

Glad to see it! I'm surprised the nutjobs haven't come out of the woodwork and flooded this page with racist nonsense yet.

Authentic people like Jorge Cornell who actually dedicate their time to bettering Greensboro should be the ones we elect, not unaccountable lawyers and developers who live so far from downtown. Cornell is truly one of the people.

All comments are welcome, but I'm glad to see a progressive voice chime in here for once. Far too often, I believe, progressives in Greensboro cede the battlefield to conservatives in the blogosphere and media discourse.

I personally am going to vote for him, and I think he has a pretty good shot of winning!

If I didn't vote in St. Louis, I'd vote for him too.
