Blogger Roch Smith Jr. has brought it to my attention that my article about cancer rates near the White Street Landfill fails to identify a source. A quote is attributed to Johnson, leaving readers to wonder whether the speaker is Mayor Yvonne Johnson. The confusion created by the omission leads blogger Sam Hieb to make that presumption on the Piedmont Publius blog.
In fact, the speaker is Ralph Johnson, chairman of Concerned Citizens of Northeast Greensboro.
I apologize to Hieb and other readers for the omission, which was entirely unintentional.
Here's how the passage should have read:
"A separate document submitted to the council by [Bob] Mays [of Cico LLC] entitled, 'Project Committee Contact Information,' lists the names of Uwakweh and Concerned Citizens of Northeast Greensboro Chairman Ralph Johnson, among others.
"'This is really strange,' Johnson said last week. 'I’m listening to Bob Mays’ proposal. I’m not signing on blindly. That’s the problem: We have these individuals coming into the community, and we really have no way of knowing what they’re going to do. They’re using us to lend their program credibility, and I take exception to that. I’m going to say something to Bob Mays. It’s almost as though we’re endorsing them; we’re not endorsing them.'"
