Dorsett's decision leaves some Democrats (in) cold

I haven't talked to many high-profile Democrats in Guilford County Katie Dorsett's stunning about-face yesterday, but if one Earl Jones' comments are any indication not too many are happy about it.

Notwithstanding the field of Republican challengers, Dorsett appears to have been holding the seat in reserve for fellow Democrat Gladys A. Robinson. Jones, who represents District 60 in the state House, noted that other Democrats such as Guilford County Commissioner Bruce Davis have had their eye on the Senate seat. Davis unsuccessfully challenged Dorsett two years ago.

"If there were some people who wanted to run, like Bruce Davis but out of deference to her didn't file, it undermines democracy and denies the citizens a choice," Jones told me this morning. "It just doesn't look right. As an incumbent she had respect. Other folk who respected her position and thought she was doing a good job might not have run. It limited the field of individuals who would run."
