Context and background on administrative investigation of Officer Robert Reyes

Greensboro police Capt. Charles Cherry writes in a memo to City Manager Rashad Young today that in mid-June he received a phone call from Officer Robert Reyes informing him that Officer DA Pinson of the Western Division had stated during lineup that Cherry had been fired. Cherry assured Reyes that the statement was not true. Cherry considered filing a malicious gossip complaint against Pinson, but decided against the idea on the basis that the officer was young and inexperienced.

Imagine Cherry's surprise when he learned that, instead, Reyes was being investigated for malicious gossip:

"On or about July 1, 2010, Officer Reyes contacted me. Officer Reyes advised me that Sergeant Isom was investigating Officer Reyes for an allegation of malicious gossip. The allegation against Officer Reyes was filed by Officer Pinson and was related to whether or not Officer Pinson made the comment about me being fired. Officer Reyes provided Sergeant Isom with a full statement, which include informing Sergeant Isom that he had indeed heard Officer Pinson make the comment."

Reyes was placed on administrative leave on Aug. 5.

Much, much more to come.

UPDATE: White citizens, including former Mayor Carolyn Allen, the Rt. Rev. Chip Marble and the Rev. Randall Keeney are scheduled to hold a press conference tomorrow at 11:45 a.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church to discuss what is termed "the growing crisis in the Greensboro Police Department."

A press statement quotes Keeney as saying, "It's a lot of smoke when 39 civil suits are pending by officers of color and at the same time four officers of color are suspended without pay and recommended for termination. We cannot dismiss the possibility that there is fire there."
