The Bay Citizen reports on a small, alt-weekly, the San Francisco Bay Guardian, which continues to make its mark, even in a down economy. Its 44-years existence surely has built equity and loyalty in readership.
Their local-focus gives them an edge even in the internet age. "When you pick up the paper, with its solid reporting on local politics and strong point of view, you know what to expect. A well-defined sensibility, deep local roots and a focus on its one and only market give the publication staying power."
I think that most alt-weeklies have growth opportunities in this area. While innovation to keep current, technology-wise, is essential, the old principle of reporting on what matters locally still has traction.
