Sal Leone reverses decision and stays in race

Sal Leone, a candidate for Greensboro City Council at large, told reporters earlier today that he planned to withdraw from the race, saying he was discouraged after learning that he had not received YES! Weekly's endorsement.

He described himself as "devastated" and "defeated" in a phone call to YES! Weekly placed, he said, while he was on the way to the Guilford County Board of Elections to make his withdrawal official. The candidate's decision was covered in the News & Record.

But Leone showed up tonight at a candidate forum at NC A&T University and said despite his earlier announcement he was still in the race. He made a spirited attack on conservative incumbents, accusing them of lying and breaking campaign promises. Leone said the reason none of the conservatives showed up at the forum, which was attended by upwards of 100 sorority members, is because they were counting on students at the historically black university to not vote.

More to come...
