RALEIGH - The North Carolina Democratic Party applauds the decision by a Superior Court judge to freeze a NC school voucher program designed to give parent taxpayers money to send their children to private schools.
NCDP Chairman Randolph Voller stated, "The voucher program takes money away from public schools. In a time of education budget cuts -- including a failure of incentive pay for professional development, the elimination of tenure as well as the Teaching Fellows program and lack of funding for classroom supplies -- the idea of a voucher program is an attack on the public school system. The NC State Constitution requires the State to provide a quality education to all school–age children, not just the privileged few."As the News & Observer reported: "Lawyers representing taxpayers, the N.C. School Boards Association and local school boards argued that the state constitution prohibits using public money to pay private K-12 school tuition. The program would give about 2,400 students who leave public school up to $4,200 each to pay tuition at a private school."
