Attorney General Cooper to Kick Off Statewide Food Drive In Winston-Salem on March 6

"The Young Lawyers Division of the North Carolina Bar Association, in conjunction with the North Carolina Association of Feeding America Food Banks, is proud to present the 2014 North Carolina Legal Feeding Frenzy.
The competition between North Carolina law firms and organizations will collect food and funds March 10-28  for  NC Feeding America Food Banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC,  with an awards ceremony scheduled April 22 at the N.C. Bar Center in Cary. A goal of 250,000 pounds of food has been established for this year’s event.

The official kickoff for the Legal Feeding Frenzy is scheduled Thursday, March 6, at 1 p.m. at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, located in Winston-Salem at 3655 Reed Street. Media representatives are urged to attend.

Attorney General Roy Cooper is serving as honorary chair of the event for the second year and will be on hand for the kickoff event. Cooper will also present the awards, including the Attorney General’s Cup to the overall champion, at the awards ceremony.

"Too many people in our state don't get enough to eat on a regular basis,” Cooper said. “Let's harness the competitive spirit that makes lawyers such great advocates in court and use it to fight hunger in North Carolina. I want to encourage all North Carolina law firms and attorneys to join the Feeding Frenzy and support their local food banks."

The Legal Feeding Frenzy Competition is divided into categories of Sole Practitioner (1-10 employees), Small Firm 11-50 employees), Medium Firm (51-100 employees), Large Firm (more than 100 employees) and Law School. The overall champion and recipient of the Attorney General’s Cup, and the recipient in each category, is the team that raises the most food and money per employee. There will also be an award for the team that raises the most food and money overall, regardless of the number of team members.

“Hunger is more prevalent than many realize,” said Cabell Clay, chair of the YLD Legal Feeding Frenzy Committee, “so any opportunity to educate others on the cause while also helping to eradicate the issue, should be embraced. I am excited about the impact the 2014 Legal Feeding Frenzy will have.”

“Many families in North Carolina continue to struggle to put enough food on the table each month,” said Alan Briggs, executive director of N.C. Association of Feeding America Food Banks said. “Sadly, the effects are harshest on our children.
