"Spring break for one group of High Point University students has been filled with opportunities to serve and learn from others in Haiti this week.
Rev. Preston Davis, minister to the university, and 11 students traveled to Haiti on March 1 to begin a week of service to the country, which was ravaged by an earthquake four years ago. The students have focused on English teaching projects in different rural communities and schools in Cange, Haiti. They’ve also held numerous events for children and adults in the area, including sponsoring a soccer game where all players received HPU gear, art activities such as painting and much more.
“Teaching English has been our tangible way of doing good, but just as important are the curriculums we have created that allow us to come alongside the children and adults we teach to form relationships and better understand their lives and world,” says Davis. “Our HPU students are taking part in something much larger than themselves – outreach to the world.”
“Our work here so far has been a one of a kind experience that has completely filled my heart,” adds HPU student Jenna Hamrick.
Their work is one of three alternative break trips HPU students have embarked on this week, including relief efforts in New Orleans and New Jersey. Alternative break trips are one of hundreds of ways that students, faculty and staff contribute 100,000 hours of service each year."
