Students offered nearly $150 million, an
increase of $22.9 million from 2013
"Greensboro, N.C. – Just apply. That was the message that Principal Patrice Faison and the counseling staff at Page High sent to graduating seniors regarding the scholarship application process.
The message got through loud and clear. This year, Page High tops the list of scholarship offers in GCS, with more than $21 million of the record-breaking $149,462,070 total dollars offered. The total reflects athletic, academic, fine arts, merit, need-based and military scholarships and grants. This exceeds the total of $26.5 million from 2013 and the previous record of $139 million in 2012.
“A college education is becoming more expensive every year, and one of our roles as counselors is to help ease that burden,” says Fredricca Stokes, supervisor of high school counseling. “We want our students to dream big when it comes to their education, and scholarships help make those dreams come true.”
Grimsley High, which topped last year’s list, increased from $14 million to nearly $16 million. The Early College at Guilford accounted for another $11 million. Several smaller schools, including the Academy at Central and the Middle College at GTCC-High Point, broke the $1 million mark this year.
Also noteworthy is Smith High, which went from $1.4 million in 2013 to $5.2 million in 2014. This year, senior counselor Clinton Wilson implemented a scholarship club, which met twice a week and drew 30 to 40 students on average. The club met in a computer lab, and students could work with staff members to apply online and get advice on the scholarships that were the best fit for them. This year’s Gates Millennium Scholar, Jason Day, is a Smith High senior.
