HPU Announces the ‘Year of the Arts,’ Issues Call to Artists for Fall Festival

"High Point University’s School of Art and Design will celebrate the spirit of art in all forms – painting, sculpting, writing, theatre, music, dance and much more – during the 2014-15 academic year thanks to a Think Big grant from the university.

Led by Dr. John Turpin, dean of the School of Art and Design, the Year of the Arts at HPU will feature dozens of events for the community and students to focus on the value that art and creativity bring to our lives. The eight-month series focuses on four main questions: How is art related to identity? What are the roles of ‘dangerous’ art? How is art a form of commerce? Is this art?

Events include a Fall Festival; a speaker’s series of world-renowned artists; several musical, dance and theatrical events that highlight the performing arts; faculty and visiting artist exhibitions in HPU’s Sechrest Gallery; and many other celebrations as the year unfolds.

Events that have been scheduled so far are available at www.highpoint.edu/yearofthearts. This calendar will continue to be updated throughout the year.

Call to Artists, Craftspeople, Tinkerers and Makers:

The kick-off to Year of the Arts will be a Fall Festival, to be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 13 on campus. It is free and open to the public.

The Fall Festival is intended to highlight those individuals, groups, schools or organizations that embrace and employ the creative process to solve simple to complex problems or provide outlets for personal expression. The university is looking for artists and engineers and everything in between to participate in this outdoor festival on campus. There is no cost to exhibit, and each exhibitor will be assigned a space to display.

Interested parties are encouraged to apply to participate in the Fall Festival here: http://www.highpoint.edu/yearofthearts/applications/."
