"GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The opening reception for the art exhibit "Crochet Jam" will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the Anne Rudd Galyon and Irene Cullis Galleries in Cowan Humanities Building, where the exhibit will be housed.
The reception and exhibit are free, and the public is invited. The event is part of ArtsGreensboro's annual 17 Days arts and entertainment festival.
"Crochet Jam" will feature the work of crochet artist Ramekon O'Arwisters and his creative collaborator, Carlo Abruzzese, in collaboration with Associate Professor Jim Langer and Assistant Professor Ted Efremoff of the Greensboro College Department of Art.
They will organize crocheting events with individuals from different communities under O'Arwisters's direction to create large, interactive rag-rug tapestries.
Abruzzese creates paintings based on demographic information from the US census specific to the site where he is working -- in this case, paintings that will represent the racial and ethnic makeup of greater Greensboro.
"The [crochet] work involves traditionally under-valued crafts skills once relegated as 'women's work,' which, since the feminist revisions and activism in the art world in the 1970s, have become strongly associated with building communities of artists and underrepresented minorities in the usual art venues," Langer says.
The public is invited to take part in public sessions of rag-rug making from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 18-20, in the galleries. There is no charge.
The exhibit will open be up through Friday, Oct. 17. Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays. For more information, contact Langer at 336-272-7102, ext. 361, or langerj@greensboro.edu.
