"Winston-Salem Police Officer A. J. Boles and Officer B. J. Thomas were conducting
an investigation into Everette Vernard Young Jr., 36, of 1243 Dublin Dr. in Winston-Salem, after they observed him
with an open container of an alcoholic beverage in the 2500 Block of Greenway
Ave. which is a violation of Winston-Salem City Ordinance.
Young and the Officers became involved in a physical
altercation, which resulted in Young assaulting both officers with his
hands and then physically resisting arrest.
Young was able to enter his vehicle (1997, GMC, K-1500, Sport
Utility Vehicle) while continuing to struggle with Officer Thomas. Young was eventually able to place the vehicle’s transmission in drive and accelerate
from the scene. Officer Thomas was
partially inside of the vehicle struggling with Young as he sped away. The vehicle dragged Officer Thomas down the
roadway for a short distance before Officer Thomas was able to free himself
from the vehicle moments later.
Officers spotted Young’s vehicle a short distance away
and attempted to initiate a traffic-stop on the vehicle. Young would not stop the vehicle for the
officers and a vehicle pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit began in the area of Robinhood Road at Reynolda Road and came
to a stop moments later at the intersection of Northwest Boulevard at North
Hawthorne Road. Young was then taken
into custody without further incident.
There were no collisions or injuries that occurred during
the vehicle pursuit. The 200 block of
North Hawthorne Road was closed for approximately 45 minutes while this
investigation was conducted.
Officer A. J. Boles is a 3 year veteran of the Winston-Salem
Police Department.
Officer B. J. Thomas is a 5 year veteran of the
Winston-Salem Police Department.
Young was treated and released for WFU Baptist Medical
Center for injuries that are considered minor.
Neither Officer was injured during this incident.
Young is currently in the Forsyth County Law
Enforcement Detention Center under $15,000.00 Secured Bond and charged with -
(Felony) Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Law Enforcement Officer. -Assault
on a Government Official (Misdemeanor) -
Speeding to Elude Law Enforcement Officers. -Possession
of Marijuana
