Youth Volunteers Pitch In to Help Homeless and Disabled Veterans
Greensboro - Catholic Heart Work Camp Volunteers spend a week with The Servant Center improving facilities for homeless and disabled veterans.
Monday, July 21 through Thursday, July 23, twenty youth from Catholic Heart Work Camp and their chaperones will spend many hours maintaining and beautifying the facilities run by The Servant Center for homeless and disabled veterans. Catholic Heart Work Camp Volunteers travel from several states away on mission to "serve and restore homes and hearts, feed the hungry, lift the spirits of children, give hope to the disabled, and provide help through partnerships with social agencies." Youth will be working with agencies all over the Greensboro to serve vulnerable populations in the community.
The Catholic Heart Work Camp group at The Servant Center will be busy with much needed landscaping, pressure washing, and gutter cleaning. Catholic Heart Work Camp Youth have been volunteering in the summer at The Servant Center for several years. Says, Fred Darby, Facilities Manager for The Servant Center, "Having these young volunteers come to The Servant Center is one of the highlights of the year for us. They work hard and accomplish so much in the time they are with us, and it's all done with lots of love and laughter."
The youth at The Servant Center range in age from 14-18 and come from Chicago, Fredericksburg, Virginia, Pittsburgh, PA, and North Carolina. Additionally, there are CHWC volunteers stationed this week at other nonprofit agencies around Greensboro that are working to address issues of food insecurity, poverty and homelessness. St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church is hosting/housing the volunteers for the week. A ceremony at St. Paul's on Thursday evening celebrated the work that's CHWC volunteers have accomplished in our community.
The Servant Center maintains a 21-bed transitional housing facility called "Servant House" for homeless and disabled men, giving priority to veterans, and operates two supportive permanent housing facilities.
