Board Considers New Twilight High School Option

Twilight West expected to open in Aug. 2016

"Greensboro, N.C. – In an effort to help students struggling in the traditional high school setting, the Guilford County Board of Education voted to move forward on plans to open a second Twilight High School in the western part of the county.

The current Twilight High School, located in Greensboro, serves students who are within eight units of graduation, but due to life obstacles need a different setting to earn their diploma. Thanks to its success, the board is considering opening a second school in High Point in order to provide easier access to students living in High Point and surrounding areas.

A current Twilight student, Shikeem Mebane, spoke in favor of the program at Thursday’s meeting. Mebane says he was referred to the school because he was getting into trouble at his home school.

“Since I’ve been at Twilight, I enjoy going to school. I’m passing all of my classes. I’m not the perfect student, but I’m not the student I was,” said Mebane.

The school would serve approximately 40 students between 2 and 8 p.m. which allows students to fulfill other obligations and continue their education at the same time.

The board approved moving forward with the program, however asked staff to investigate the possibility of additional cost savings and various locations.

Twilight West could open by the 2016-17 school year."
