NC Fresh Catch visits The Big Winston for the 1st annual "Catch On Trade", Sat., Dec. 5

"The Big Winston warehouse on Trade Street will be the scene for the first annual "Catch on Trade" event set for Sat., Dec. 5 from 1-7pm.

The family-friendly event will be the perfect time to celebrate the holiday season with live local Jazz, R&B, Soul, Funk, and Rock 'n Roll plus smoked and steamed oysters, seafood gumbo, BBQ by Camel City BBQ Factory, local beer, wine, and complimentary tours and tastings from participating Big Winston Warehouse businesses throughout the day.

Enjoy drinks and live music from 1-7pm from Mason Via, Groove Food, Eyes Eat Suns, Melva Houston, and the Hump Day Players and fresh seafood and BBQ from 1:30 on. The event takes place under roof and throughout the parking lot of the Big Winston Warehouse and Open Market at 772 N. Trade Street, Winston Salem.

Tables and chairs are provided plus burn barrels to help keep warm!  Please bring lawn chairs for extra seating. Tickets are $8 advance and $12 at the gate.

Mast General Store Celebrates Friends’ Day on September 12

"The Dalai Lama observes: “Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days. An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend – or a meaningful day.” There is much wisdom in his quote. On Saturday, September 12, the Mast Store in Winston-Salem is celebrating Friends’ Day by hosting volunteers from Old Salem Museums and Gardens. 

The staff and volunteers at Old Salem Museums and Gardens are dedicated to transporting visitors to the late 1700s. Through original structures and costumed interpreters the life and times of the Moravians, who settled in Salem, comes to life.

Old Salem began coming together in 1950, when a group of volunteers united to preserve and restore the town of Salem for future generations. Today, the group is undertaking an ambitious program to re-imagine the potential for the museums, gardens, and town. The On Common Ground initiative hopes to fund improvements to the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts and the Frank L. Horton Museum Center, as well as the restoration of the Boys’ School and the Dr. Samuel Benjamin Vierling House. These projects, along with others in support of Old Salem, will continue to enhance the visitor experience and the attraction’s sustainability.

“Old Salem Museums and Gardens is a great neighbor for us in our newest home, Winston-Salem,” said Fred Martin, president of the Mast Store. “They have helped us with native plantings for the walkway beside the store and have shared their history and the history of the area with our staff members to help us enhance our customers’ experiences in town.”

At the end of the day on Saturday, September 12, the Mast Store will make a donation of 10% of the day’s sales from the store in Winston-Salem to provide meaningful support of the Old Salem Museums and Gardens.

Sixth Annual Marine Mud Run coming to Jomeokee Park

"The Percy John Fulton Detachment 1075 of the Winston-Salem, NC Marine Corps League announces the 6th Annual Marine Mud Run to be held Saturday, June 6th, 2015 at Jomeokee Park and Campground in Pinnacle, NC.   

The Mud Run has grown tremendously, from 1,335 participants in 2010, to over 3,100 participants in 2014.  Last year’s event raised over $70,000 for the Marine Corps League Mud Run charities, including Wounded Warrior Battalion East located at Camp Lejeune, NC;  Toys-for-Tots, Veterans Helping Veterans Heal, Young Marines Youth Program, Military Order of the Purple Heart, NC State Veterans Home in Salisbury, Eagle Scout Programs and MCL Detachment 1075.  As part of the original mission of the Marine Mud Run, proceeds from the event are used to help local military charities.  Mud Run Directors Bob Fulmer and Lewis Pleasants are proud to report, “We drive as far as Camp Lejeune, NC to hand-deliver our funds to the commanding officer at Wounded Warrior Battalion East.  We support local charities so that we can visit with each of them and ensure that our proceeds are being used to make a difference.” 

This year the Mud Run will be limited to 5,100 participants.  Runners will be organized into separate starts (or “waves”) released at 10-minute intervals.  Each wave will include approximately 500 runners for both individuals and teams.  

EARLY ON-LINE REGISTRATION IS GREATLY ENCOURAGED TO ENSURE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EVENT. 

The 5K run/walk is both competitive and family oriented.  The 5K will include wooded areas, streams and open fields with lots of hills, obstacles and mud.  Volunteers (including active-duty Marines who serve as Drill Instructors for the day) will be available along the path with water and assistance.  The Pollywog Run (for ages 12 and under) includes a long and short version, up to almost 1 mile of the full 5K event.  Spectators are encouraged to attend and bring cameras.

The 5K Individual Race will begin at 8:00 am, the Pollywog Run will begin at 10:00 am and the 5K Team Race will begin at 10:45 am.  Prizes will be given for best costumes and top finishers, and awards will be given to all Pollywog Run participants.  Post-race snacks/fruit and water will be provided, and music will be playing from center stage.

Early check-in/registration AND PACKET PICK UPS for the event will take place at Omega Sports in Thruway Shopping Center from 12 – 7 pm on Friday, June 5th, 2015.  Also on Friday night, June 5th, Chick-Fil-a of Stanleyville will be hosting dinner from 5:00-7:30 with 10% of the proceeds going to the Marine Mud Run program.

“Arts Alive in Old Salem” Scheduled for March 25 & April 8

Moravian music and arts to be highlighted during day of activities

"WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Old Salem Museums & Gardens will again host the popular educational program “Arts Alive in Old Salem” on Wednesday, March 25 and Wednesday, April 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Arts Alive brings the rich history of the arts in early America to life for young people. The cost is $9 per student, $20 for adults.  Old Salem pays for one adult per 12 students. Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-441-5305.  Students must be accompanied by a teacher or adult.

The Moravians, who founded Salem in 1766, were widely known for their music as well as their handcrafts: pottery, cabinetry, guns, silver, tin wares, and textiles. Music and the arts were interwoven into the daily life of Salem through work, worship, and education.  Children in grades K-5 are invited to visit Old Salem for a day of hands-on arts based activities and demonstrations throughout the historic town.

Some of the hands-on activities participants will experience include:

• Watching a puppet show at the Heirloom Puppet Theater
• Learning about the Moravian legacy of music in Salem both secular and sacred and hear the 1800 Tannenberg Organ
• Enjoying a delightful look at early childhood in Salem through a study of photographs from our collection
• Trying their hand at block printing and theorem painting
• Learning about the art of Moravian decorated pottery
• And many more hands-on activities and demonstrations throughout the historic district.

Police respond to suspecious package at Red Lobster

"On Jan. 30 at 10:43am Winston-Salem Police Officers responded to the Red Lobster Restaurant, 1609 Westbrook Plaza Dr., on a reported suspicious package.  A small black suitcase was located lying in the natural area in front of the business.  The suitcase was not present when employees first arrived at the business. The suitcase had what appeared to be a white or gray wire hanging out of the suitcase with no other markings.

Upon arrival, the area was blocked off and personnel at the restaurant were evacuated.  The business was not open, so there were no customers present. Personnel with the Hazardous Materials Squad responded as well as EMS and fire department personnel.  It was later determined that the suitcase was actually empty except for a clothes hanger which was protruding from the side. At this point the restaurant was opened for business. 

The owner of the suitcase was never identified.   It appears to have been inadvertently left at this location."

Ham's at Thruway Center Opening in November!

Greensboro-based Ham's Restaurants has announced it plan to open a new location at the Thruway Center in Winston-Salem in November. It is expected to open around Nov, 18.

Renovations have been on-going at the former Fox & Hound location, 327 Lower Mall Dr., over the past three months.

“We are proud to be a part of the lineup of great shops and restaurants at the Thruway Center, and we look forward to bringing an all new Ham's experience to Winston-Salem" said Ham's Restaurants president Rocky Scarfone. "Since June, we have been putting together some new additions for this Ham's location which are tailored towards ensuring that every guest has a wonderful experience.”

Among the renovations will be an on-demand beer tap wall that guests can operate and serve themselves.

“Our new beer wall will be a unique and fun way to experience the vast variety of craft beers that are rotated frequently,” stated Scarfone.

In addition to a newly renovated exterior and interior, Ham's at Thruway Center features all of Ham's favorite menu offerings plus some new surprises. There will be over 32 draft beers on tap, pool tables, dartboards, a ping-pong table, over 50 high definition televisions, three 110' high definition TVs and the Triad's only Sound Hound_TM system, which will enable guests to listen to whichever game they want right at their own table.
