All Ireland Gaelic Football Championship Match to be shown at a/perture cinema

"Winston-Salem’s newest sports team, the Winston-Salem Wolfhounds, is hosting the ‘Super Bowl’ of Gaelic Football out of Ireland between Kerry and Dublin at a/perture cinema this Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8pm.

Gaelic football has been played in Ireland in some form for over 700 years. Although no true professional teams exist (re: players are not paid to play), the County-level finals pack the 80,000 seat stadium in Dublin every year. The governing body, the Gaelic Athletic Association, today has a registry of thousands of teams worldwide, now including your very own Winston-Salem Wolfhounds.

Tim Cronin, founder of the Wolfhounds, is originally from County Kerry and has played most of his life and even at the club level in Ireland as a young adult. He came to North Carolina where he played for the team in Raleigh then moved to Winston Salem and started the team last year. He saw in the city a cultural vibrancy that would be a foundation to bringing the sport to life.

The championship will be shown at 8pm with concessions available before the start and during halftime. The event is free to the public with a suggested donation of $5 going towards the Wolfhounds.

With the reposession looming, Nade will resort to measures her former self, untouched by the realities of economic desperation and moral compromise, would have found depraved, as she makes one last extreme effort to secure the money she needs.

AN HONEST LIAR is a feature documentary about the world-famous magician, escape artist, and world-renowned enemy of deception, James 'The Amazing' Randi. A master deceiver who came out of the closet at the age of 81, Randi created fictional characters, fake psychics, and even turned his partner of 25 years, the artist Jose Alvarez, into a sham guru named Carlos. But when a shocking revelation in Randi's personal life is discovered, it isn't clear whether Randi is still the deceiver - or the deceived.

"(Winston-Salem, NC) – a/perture cinema announces the special “A Trip to Paris” themed films as part of their family-friendly film series,  Kids at Heart.  “A Trip to Paris” features either French-produced films, or films that are set in Paris- and all films are rated either G or PG.  Films in the series include a double feature of the classic French children’s films THE RED BALLOON and WHITE MANE, Oscar-nominated animated film A CAT IN PARIS, and Martin Scorsese-directed family film HUGO.

The widowed Duchess of Malfi longs to marry her lover, the steward Antonio. But her rancorous brothers, Ferdinand and the Cardinal, are implacably opposed to the match. When their spy, Bosola, discovers that the Duchess has secretly married and carries Antonio’s child, they exact a terrible and horrific revenge.

The Duchess of Malfi, featuring Hollywood star Gemma Arterton in the title role, is a thrilling combination of brilliant coups de théâtre, horrific set-pieces and vivid characters, all lit by Webster’s obsessional imagination.

Gemma Arterton returned to The Globe to play the Duchess in this sell-out production. Gemma made her professional stage debut at the Globe in 2007, when she won huge critical acclaim as Rosaline in Love’s Labour’s Lost.

TITUS ANDRONICUS

Returning to Rome from a war against the Goths, the general Titus Andronicus brings with him the queen Tamora and her three sons as prisoners of war. Titus’ sacrifice of Tamora’s eldest son to appease the ghosts of his dead sons, and his decision to refuse to accept the title of emperor, initiates a terrible cycle of mutilation, rape and murder. And all the while, at the centre of the nightmare, there moves the villainous, self-delighting Aaron.

Grotesquely violent and daringly experimental, Titus was the smash hit of Shakespeare’s early career, and is written with a ghoulish energy he was never to repeat elsewhere. This production revisited Lucy Bailey’s spectacular Globe production of 2006 and caused a stir throughout the UK media with staged violence so realistic that throughout its run the play saw audience members fainting in the stalls. The 2015 cinema release will have audiences on the edges of their seats from start to grisly end.

Opposing dictatorship and republicanism, private virtue and mob violence, Shakespeare’s tense drama of high politics reveals the emotional currents that flow between men in power with themes that still resonate even today. This sell-out production employed authentic Renaissance costumes and staging, and Dominic Dromgoole’s impassioned interpretation of one of Shakespeare’s classic plays showcased “a rapport between the performers and the audience that feels genuinely magical” (Daily Telegraph).

ANTONY & CLEOPATRA

Cleopatra, the alluring and fascinatingly ambiguous Queen of Egypt, has bewitched the great Mark Antony, soldier, campaigner and now one of the three rulers of the Roman Empire. Virtue and vice, transcendent love and realpolitik combine in Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the conflicting claims of sex and power, all expressed in a tragic poetry of breath-taking beauty and magnificence. THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

Take one pair of estranged twin brothers (both called Antipholus), and one pair of estranged twin servants (both called Dromio), keep them in ignorance of each other and throw them into a city with a reputation for sorcery, and you have all the ingredients for theatrical chaos. One Antipholus is astonished by his foreign hospitality; the other enraged by the hostility of his home town. The Dromios, caught between the two, are soundly beaten for obeying all the wrong orders.

Basing his plot on a farce by Plautus, Shakespeare caps the mayhem of his Roman original to build up a hectic tale of violent cross-purposes, furious slapstick and social nightmare.

The final Globe On Screen film for 2015 brings the perfect light relief to close an epic season of war and tragedy. This sell-out production employed authentic Renaissance costumes and staging and will have cinema audiences roaring with laughter as it crams in “more hilarious anarchy than you can shake a fish, cat or identity-confused servant at.” (London Theatre Guide).

The Arts Council, a/perture cinema and Coffee Park to Host “Sunset Flicks” Movies, music, food at Winston Square Park three Sundays in October

Winston-Salem, NC  (October 6. 2014) -- The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County in collaboration with a/perture cinema and Coffee Park will host “Sunset Flicks” on three Sundays in October – a free event at Winston-Square Park featuring movies, live music and food.  “We want to continue building vibrancy in downtown Winston-Salem and creating entertainment opportunities that appeal to diverse audiences. Sunset Flicks does just that – movies, music and food – in an amphitheater in the heart of the City of Arts and Innovation,”   said Jim Sparrow, President and CEO of The Arts Council.

The S2dio Supplies Mobile Art Bus will be on site with art and an art activity for kids, and representatives of the Children’s Home will be selling pumpkins from the Children Home’s  Reynolda Road pumpkin patch.

“Of course, we are excited about having these popular movies in a public venue for all to enjoy, but we also wanted to create a festive event around the movies with lots of energy that is family friendly,” said Lawren Desai, owner of a/perture cinema, the independent, locally-owned art house cinema in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem.

The B. Kin Band appearing October 12 fits the bill, describing itself as a rock/folk hybrid. October 19 the Dan River Girls, three sisters from Winston-Salem who play a bevy of instruments (mandolin, cello; double bass; classical violin and fiddle) will provide the music.  Ranging in age from 10-15, they are crowd pleasers, reflecting well on their voice teacher Martha Bassett and traditional instrumental music instructor, Rex McGee.  October 26, old-time blues, swing and country music performers, Twin City Buskers, will be on hand.  Equally at home playing a street corner, chicken stew gathering or club, the band always gets feet tapping.

The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, the first locally established arts council in the United States, is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year. Featuring 13 local artists’ film-inspired

artwork and film selections

Winston-Salem, NC –To celebrate five years in business, a/perture cinema is hosting a new Screen Club series in 2014, which features selected favorite films from 13 local artists who have designed corresponding film-inspired artwork. a/perture is proud to partner with Delurk Gallery, Ember Audio & Video, and Airtype Studios in this series.  Screenings occur monthly on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m., and admission is $11.50, with several reduced-price promotional opportunities throughout the series. 

Featured films include those from a wide variety of genres, time periods, and countries of origin, ranging from Pan’s Labyrinth to Pretty in Pink.  At each screening, a limited edition of 50 signed 18” x 24” poster prints will be available for purchase featuring the artwork of a local artist who has designed a piece inspired by the film being screened. The series kicked off on February 26 with Groundhog Day, and will conclude on December 3 with The Shawshank Redemption (find the full schedule below).

I've always been inspired by film and making a movie poster is something I've always wanted to do. To have the opportunity to create art for one of my favorite movies was really exciting. I think it's a great way to increase the visibility of the artists living in Winston.” Fellow Screen Club artist Les Caison also expressed his enthusiasm for the series: “Props to a/perture for presenting the community a compelling opportunity to enjoy culture. Screen Club provides the public, local businesses, and local artists a way to connect with each other and internationally known movies.
