Guilford homeless agencies receive federal funds
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development has announced $1.4 million in funding for 10 homeless services agencies in Guilford County. The federal grant funds services such as street outreach and assessment, transitional and permanent housing, job training, healthcare, mental health counseling, substance abuse and childcare. The funding stream includes $477,369 to the Greensboro Housing Authority for its Housing Opportunities program, $452,124 for Mary’s House spent with both the housing authority and the program itself, $121,548 to the housing authority for the Home At Last program, and $51,700 to Youth Focus.

North Carolina labor activist honored
UNITE-HERE International Union president John Wilhelm will give the keynote speech at an event to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Crystal Lee Sutton at the Glenwood Community Center in Greensboro on Saturday. Sutton was a labor activist who took part in the successful drive to unionize the JP Stevens textile plant in Roanoke Rapids in the 1970s and the inspiration of the 1979 movie Norma Rae, starring Sally Fields.
