Photos of White Street Landfill protest
Thirty-one carloads of people caravanned from New Garden Friends Meeting in west Greensboro to the White Street Landfill in the city's northeast quadrant on Friday to send a message to the city council to keep the landfill closed to household waste. The League of Women Voters of the Piedmont Triad and the New Garden Friends Meeting Social Concerns Committee joined Citizens for Economic and Environmental Justice in opposing the landfill's reopening. About 120 people gathered at the landfill. Speakers included three former mayors — Yvonne Johnson, Keith Holliday and Carolyn Allen — along with District 2 Councilman Jim Kee and his predecessor, Goldie Wells. (photos by Quentin L.
