NC Values Coaliton disavows electioneering effort for conservative judges

A spokesperson said the NC Values Coalition, the lobbying group that promoted the successful marriage amendment approved by North Carolina voters earlier this year, is not responsible for financing an electioneering effort with poll workers handing out fliers urging people to vote for conservative judicial candidates.

Poll workers at at least three polling places — 14th Street Recreation, Carver High School and Bethania Moravian Church — in Winston-Salem handed out the fliers today. One of them, Sabriya Clark, indicated that she was a paid worker rather than a volunteer. Winston-Salem City Councilwoman Molly Leight also said the flier was distributed outside polling places during early voting.

The flier states,

"If you believe MARRIAGE is between
one man and one woman, vote for
these judicial candidates*

"NC Supreme Court Justice Paul Martin Newby

"NC Court of Appeals Judges
David S. Robinson
Marty McGee
Chris Dillon

"* Their opponents are endorsed by radical homosexual activist group, Equality NC.

"Paid for by the North Carolina Values Coalition. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee."

"We don't have any paid poll workers," said Jessica Wood, a spokesperson for NC Values Coalition. She said the material on the flier appears to be taken from NC Values Coalition's website, but she didn't know why someone else would finance an electioneering effort and state that it was paid for by NC Values Coalition
