JAMESTOWN – Guilford Technical
Community College culinary students are national champions. The GTCC team
comprised of five culinary students claimed the national title in the Baron H.
Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl on July 27. The competition is part of the
American Culinary Federation (ACF) National Convention in Kansas City, MO.
This
is GTCC’s first national win in the competition. The GTCC team also won a
silver medal for the most points scored per round. The fast-pace "Jeopardy"-style
contest features challenging culinary, baking, nutrition, sanitation and math
questions drawn from five nationally published textbooks for culinary
professionals.
The
GTCC team is comprised of Alexia D'Egidio (captain)
of Greensboro, Jessica Bower of Greensboro, Jeffrey Craddock of Greensboro,
Aisha Boston of Greensboro, and Michael Nasrallah of Winston-Salem.
Patrick Sanecki, assistant professor of culinary arts at GTCC, and Linda Beitz,
associate professor of hospitality management at GTCC, coached the team.
“The team has spent over nine months preparing for this
success, and it has paid off,” Sanecki said. “They did a really good job.”
“I cannot express the joy and honor it was to be a part of the
team,” Beitz said. “These students have represented GTCC with amazing
integrity.”
In April, the GTCC team won overall in the ACF Southeast Region
Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl during the 2014 ACF Southeast Regional
Conference in North Charleston, S.C. That title advanced them to the national
competition where they competed against the three other regional winners in the
country.
Guilford Technical
Community College is the third largest of 58 institutions in the NC Community
College System. GTCC serves more than 40,000 students annually from four major
campuses and three specialized centers. Learn more at www.gtcc.edu.
