ArtsGreensboro Joins National #GivingTuesday on December 2 to Encourage Holiday Spending With a Purpose

Donations to ArtsGreensboro will benefit the 2015 ArtsFund, which provides over $1.2 million annually to more than 50 arts organizations, artists, and teachers

"ArtsGreensboro President and CEO Tom Philion announced today that ArtsGreensboro has joined #GivingTuesday, a first-of-its-kind effort that harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners—nonprofits, families, businesses, and individuals—to transform how people think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season.

Coinciding with Thanksgiving and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday follows Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. “It’s our hope that on December 2, 2014—the Tuesday after Thanksgiving—people in Greensboro will join forces with others around the country to give back,” said Philion. “#GivingTuesday is a new platform that will help us remind our community of the importance of supporting the arts as part of their holiday giving.”

Secure online donations to ArtsGreensboro may be made by visiting www.artsgreensboro.org/contribute. Donations may also be made by calling 336-373-7523, x245, or by check to ArtsGreensboro, P.O. Box 877, Greensboro, NC 27402.

#GivingTuesday was created in 2012 by a group of friends and partners, led by New York City’s 92nd Street YMCA, to celebrate the great American tradition of giving. Now in its third year, more than 10,000 nonprofits across the country are joining forces to create a national movement dedicated to holiday giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become synonymous with holiday shopping.

“GivingTuesday is a counter-narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just about consumerism,” said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the United Nations Foundation, a founding partner of the movement. “The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends, and neighbors is the commitment to work together to build a better world.”
