Theatre Alliance to perform Stand By Your Man: The Tammy Wynette Story

PHYSICAL ADDRESS: Theatre Alliance, 1047 Northwest Blvd; Winston-Salem, NC

By Mark St. Germain
Music by Tammy Wynette and others

Tammy Wynette, the woman behind the legend and the incredible songs that made her the first lady of country music, leaps off the stage and into your heart.  Through her eyes, the audience relives her journey from the cotton fields of Itawamba, Mississippi, to international superstar.  With comic flair and dramatic impact, Stand by Your Man recounts triumphs and tragedies and explores Tammy's relationships with the five husbands she stood by, her beloved daughters, her strong-willed mother and two of her dearest friends: colorful writer and producer Billy Sherrill and film star Burt Reynolds.  Among the 26 songs are "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," "’Til I Can Make It on My Own", and "Golden Ring."

Stand By Your Man was the winner of 2014 Summer Six-Pack fundraising contest as the show patrons most wanted to see revived on the TA stage.  As before, the show will star Mary Lea Williams as Tammy Wynette and Gray Smith as George Jones.  “I am honored to portray an artist who, according to Billboard magazine, had 96 titles on the Top Country Albums chart.  He was a troubled artist, and that struggle is reflected in his music.” – Gray Smith

Artistic Director Jamie Lawson states “Theatre Alliance is glad to revive “Stand By Your Man:  The Tammy Wynette Story,” especially with the unfortunate, recent passing of George Jones.  Our audiences voted for the return of this show because they love the timeliness of Tammy’s music; the heartbreak and joy she releases through her songs speaks for itself.”

Theatre Alliance is also in the midst of a capital campaign for renovations to their home on Northwest Blvd.  Entitled “Size Matters” the fundraiser will renovate and rotate the intimate space to allow for more seating.  Stand By Your Man will be one of the last productions to take place in the current incarnation.

"The best thing I have seen and heard in years.  I mean the best!
From the first minute to the last this was a pure joy."  ThatsCountry.com

The Theatre Alliance production is directed by Jamie Lawson and musically directed by Tommy Jackson.  The cast stars Mary Lea Williams as Tammy Wynette and Gray Smith as George Jones and includes returning cast members Karen Robertson, Neil Shepherd, Stephen Robinson.
