"The legendary John Coltrane grew up in High Point. Since 2002, the High Point Arts Council has sponsored the John Coltrane Jazz Workshop (JCJW) for youth as a tribute to this world famous jazz saxophonist.
Again this summer, students will be able to attend a jazz summer workshop in the city where John Coltrane grew up and learned to play jazz. The workshop is available to all rising 7th through 12th graders with varying levels of ability in bass, percussion, guitar/keyboard, brass (trumpet, trombone), or woodwind instruments (clarinet, flute, saxophone).
The workshop is from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., July 27–30, 2015, and will be located at Penn-Griffin School for the Arts on E. Washington Drive in High Point. The registration fee for the workshop is only $100 (partial and full scholarships are available—see the back of this form). Students will receive a complimentary midmorning snack each day and a JCJW logo t-shirt.
During the workshop, students will learn jazz history, jazz theory, and will be taught by educators and performers who are highly regarded as jazz specialists. The faculty for the workshop will be led by Wally West, Administrative Director and member of the Piedmont Triad Jazz Orchestra and the Director of Jazz Studies at Gardner-Webb University. The faculty for the workshop includes musicians who teach and perform throughout the state.
On Thursday evening, July 30 following the completion of the workshop, the students will play before an audience at a free jazz concert for the community. This concert will be held at Penn-Griffin where the students will perform on the stage of the school that Coltrane attended in his youth. The students and faculty of the John Coltrane Jazz Workshop will wear the t-shirts given to them during the workshop so that they look and perform as an ensemble.
If you play an instrument and enjoy making music, then this workshop is for you! Just fill out the registration form (available online at www.HighPointArts.org/arts/arts-education-programs/john-coltrane-jazz-workshop/) and mail before June 30, 2015. If you have any questions, contact the Programs Coordinator at the High Point Arts Council at 336-889-2787 ext. 26 or programs@highpointarts.org."
