THE Hot Sardines                                                                             Tues, January 26 • 8:00pm
TICKETS ON SALE FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, AT NOON
It's a great American success story worthy of the cinema: a born-and-bred NYC actor meets a Parisian-born writer at an open jazz jam over a noodle shop in Manhattan, and before you could say "Bourbon Street Parade," The Hot Sardines were bringing their contagious brand of joy to audiences all over the world. Bandleader Evan "Bibs" Palazzo and lead singer "Miz Elizabeth" Bougerol combine with the Sardine ensemble of powerhouse musicians - and their very own tap dancer - to play "hot jazz" as it was in the era when live music was king: with a little glamour, a little grit, and a lot of passion. Even while giving voice to the history-defining jazz of the 1920s, '30s, and '40s, The Hot Sardines' vibrant performances bridge generations and captivate 21st-century audiences. Vanity Fair applauds their "unique repertoire, and a sound and style that are distinctly their own."
Tickets are $47.50 for premium orchestra pit seating, $34.50, $27.50, $20.00 or $10.00, depending on location.

GREENHILL ANNOUNCES JONATHAN BRILLIANT ON-SITE

Jonathan Brilliant working on his installation for
Stick, Stack, Show (2011) at the Center for Visual Arts in
Richmond, VA ©2011 Jonathan Brilliant
"(GREENSBORO, NC) Greenhill announces the 2015 summer exhibition, Jonathan Brilliant On-Site, on display June 19 – August 30, 2015. Curated by Edie Carpenter, the exhibition is the first major exhibition in the Triad of the constructed environments of Raleigh-based artist Jonathan Brilliant known for his labor intensive installations.

Brilliant’s installation at Greenhill will be a modification of his coffee shop themed installations entitled “Have Sticks Will Travel: World Tour,” a marathon series of site-specific installations that have taken place in 13 galleries over 18 months, in three countries, and on two continents. Brilliant has utilized repurposed materials sourced primarily from coffee shop culture – composing his palette from disposable wooden stir sticks, iced coffee straws, paper cup sleeves and plastic cup lids. He explains, “In this ongoing series of work, I now continue to explore my sense that the coffee shop and related consumer environs are more organic and nurturing than the ‘real’ natural environment.” At Greenhill, Brilliant will develop a focused site-responsive work centered on the unique features and architecture of The Gallery at Greenhill. The installation, containing between 30,000-50,000 stir sticks woven in place entirely with tension and compression with no adhesive, creates an uncanny sculptural environment for the viewer, resulting in a unique experience for onlookers where they are quite literally immersed in an environment created from nothing but the repurposed materials from everyday life.  While on site he will create a dynamic and engaging installation reflecting his interests in the effects of labor, performance and materials applied to an exhibition space.

During the first ten days of Jonathan Brilliant On-Site, visitors will observe firsthand the construction and evolution of Brilliant’s immersive environment during open artist “residency hours”.  The open artist residency hours (12-2pm each day from June 23-27, 2015) give the artist the space and freedom to create something unexpected not only for himself but for Greenhill audiences as well.  The site-specific work will be constructed in at least one-half of Greenhill’s expansive 7,000 square foot gallery, with its high ceilings, bamboo flooring, abundant natural light and a front window looking out on a public city park.

“Brilliant has developed a specific construction technique that allows him to create airy woven walls of wooden sticks held together uniquely by tension and compression; meandering suspended paper pipes; and target-shaped geometric wall reliefs that evoke manufactured reiterations of Jasper Johns paintings,” explains Carpenter. His environments appear new-age in their responsiveness to site yet project a strong traditional craft-based sensibility in their elegant construction. Though his woven stick structures are Brilliant’s most well-known art form, he states that “…central to all my work is an interest in patterning and mark-making fused with the use of pre-consumer manufactured materials and the use of rhythm and repetition …”

Brilliant incorporates elements specific to each site in the conception of his work and in The Gallery at Greenhill, housed in the former front offices of the old News and Record building, the artist was particularly taken with the ceiling’s decorative plaster egg and dart moldings and the four concrete columns that divide the gallery.  He will use the moldings as inspirations for patterning and printmaking and use the columns as support for his monumental tensile structure.  Greenhill’s exhibition also includes works on paper and smaller assemblages with large mono-prints made from ferrous metal objects and crates enclosing 3-d structures.

According to Brilliant, “The creation of this work entirely in situ is grounded in my belief that the gallery space may be in direct conflict with the space where art is normally created and conceived. In order to dissolve these boundaries I try whenever possible to create my work in the place where it will be experienced. This act ensures that the audience will encounter my work in the same context where it was created.”

Laura Way, Executive Director explains, “Greenhill, has presented an exceptional range of exhibitions in the past 41 years, but rarely do exhibitions include site-specific, installation-based work that has this level of artist response to the environment and audience engagement.”  Once constructed, the work will be the center-point to myriad activities for adults and children and families through ArtQuest, Greenhill’s education program. ArtQuest Summer camps have been developed to take advantage of the installation’s sense of fun and whimsy as well as the art, science and engineering that it took to construct. Brilliant will lead an artist talk and conduct a teen workshop. The actual deconstruction at the end of the exhibition will be as lively and interactive as the construction. Greenhill envisions a contest to find identify the lucky one who gets to pull the right stick that sets the entire installation a tumbling down.

“How audiences interact with art, and how they define art is shifting and evolving as quickly as one can capture an image on Instagram, and it is incumbent on Greenhill to embrace changing realities of how art is viewed, received and perceived. With this residency for Jonathan Brilliant, Greenhill will establish a defined practice within its artistic program of incorporating an active audience participatory exhibition model into the curatorial matrix,” Way said. For more information about the exhibition visit www.greenhillnc.org/jonathan-brilliant-on-site.

Maestro Gerard Schwarz, EMF’s music director, warmly anticipates the arrival of Mr. Williams, “I am very pleased to welcome Chris to Greensboro and our EMF family. I strongly believe that he will help guide us in our continuing great tradition of artistic and educational excellence and with his broad knowledge of music and festival administration help us move forward in new and wonderful ways.”

Chris Williams will be the bridge into a new era for Eastern Music Festival. At the foundation of his leadership qualities are his natural ability to teach and his love of sharing knowledge with audiences. “Everything EMF does is about education whether in the classroom, the concert hall, or a pre-concert lecture. It takes adaptability and creativity to engage patrons and excite the community. We are always looking for new ways to tell our story,” said Williams.

A skilled grant writer and fundraiser, Chris also understands the nuts and bolts of producing festivals. For 22 years, he has been actively engaged in the presentation of the arts and music through festivals, media and community. Williams holds a BA in Music Education from the University of Georgia and a MA in American Civilization from George Washington University. Currently, he serves as the executive director at Garth Newel Music Center, a non-profit offering classical chamber music, jazz and blues performances, as well as a student fellowship program for instrumentalists ages 18-26. Prior to his assignment with Garth Newel, Williams was the Cultural Heritage programs manager at Arlington Cultural Affairs in Arlington, Virginia and program director at the National Council for the Traditional Arts in Silver Springs, Maryland.

One of Chris’ intriguing connections to Greensboro is his prior work for the National Council for the Traditional Arts where he programmed festivals like the National Folk Festival, which begins a three-year residency next September in downtown Greensboro.

Chris Williams begins full-time with Eastern Music Festival, January 1, 2015."

OCTOBER 25, 2014 – LEANNE PIZIO’S FALL “KEEP IT LOCAL” SHOW

"(Greensboro, NC) – The Twice-Annual “Keep It Local” Art Show continues into its 16th year at Leanne Pizio’s Stealing Crow Farm in Oak Ridge, NC.  This year’s Fall Show is scheduled for Saturday, October 25th from 10am – 4pm at 2409 Oak Ridge Road, Oak Ridge, NC.  The Rain Date is Sunday, October 26th at the same time and location.

This year’s Keep It Local show is focusing on over 20 local visual artists in a variety of media in an exciting, festival-style setting supporting the “Buy Local” philosophy.

Founder, organizer and regional potter Leanne Pizio highlights, “We’ve been doing this show for a while now and we work to bring in different and new artists who work in all different art mediums.  This show will have artists who specialize in pottery, jewelry, painting, pen and ink prints, wood, glass, metal, fabric, fiber and multi-media so the entire art world is represented.  More importantly, the artists are local and by hosting the show twice a year, we’re supporting both them and the local residents who come to the show.”

The Keep It Local Show’s philosophy is to support local artists in whom buyers will buy their local artwork.  The artists in turn invest back into our local community by buying supplies, paying their bills and supporting other local businesses.  It is a Local Investment Circle and keeps all the money spent in our local community..

To continue the local support theme, Keep It Local offers visitors another way to give back to the community by participating in its Art Hunt.  Similar to the traditional Easter Egg Hunt, the Art Hunt (11am-until all the art is gone), asks participants for either 6 canned goods or $5 to find small pieces of artwork provided by the showcased artists within a designated area.  The Fall Keep it Local event’s proceeds will support the Servant Center of Greensboro; to learn about their mission: http://www.theservantcenter.org/.

The Stealing Crow Farm began in 2008 by regional potter Leanne Pizio.  Leanne’s studio includes a gallery space, kiln room and working studio space in a converted barn behind her home in Oak Ridge.  Her work is collected and exhibited throughout North Carolina and the country.  Leanne is known for her original sgrafitto work: hand-carved black on white, wood-cut style of pottery.
