Theatre Art Galleries of High Point, NC will open its 2015 exhibition season with “Vernacular Expressions: Contemporary Folk Art from Three Private Collections”

"Opening Thurs., Jan. 22 with an Opening Reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the show will bring together more than 50 works by American self-taught artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, all loaned from the private collections of Piedmont Triad residents.

James Harold Jennings
Widely known artists represented in the exhibition include Eddie Arning, David Butler, Raymond Coins, Howard Finster, James Harold Jennings, Eddie Owens Martin (aka St. EOM), Willie Massey, Carl McKenzie, Bruce New, Melissa Polhamus, Royal Robertson, Jack Savitsky, Mary T. Smith and Inez Nathaniel Walker. The exhibition represents a broad spectrum of work created by artists who haven’t undergone any formal academic training. Often loosely categorized as folk art, such work has also been tagged with the contested designation “outsider art,” and some of it has been characterized as visionary. The works to be shown deal with a range of themes, including wild nature, farm life, religion and spirituality, American history, industrial labor, romantic love and celebratory gatherings. These works have been generously loaned for the exhibition by Tom Fairchild, Sarah McWhorter and Chris Roulhac, all of whom live in Greensboro. Fairchild is a native of High Point.

This will be the third in a series of exhibitions guest-curated for Theatre Art Galleries by writer and independent curator Tom Patterson, a resident of Winston-Salem who is internationally known for his books, articles, and essays on contemporary folk art.
Gallery B will host textile artist Elaine O’Neil. Growing up in rural Maine as the daughter of an ardent seamstress, she became inspired to study textiles at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. Her work has been shown in galleries up and down the East Coast as well as in the mountains of North Carolina. Elaine regularly does commissions and has created pieces for clients in Russia, England, Greece, Italy, and France, as well as in many states in the U.S. Her work is also in the collections of many colleges, businesses, and hospitals, on the cover of several books and publications, and she has illustrated two children’s books.

Elaine says of her work, “My artistic process begins with the simple, pure memories of my childhood. I strive to conjure up the essence of those good times and capture them through whimsy and color, stitching them together with a sense of humor and delight.  My process begins by approaching each textile collage with a simple sketch. Then through snips and cuts, my scissors, like a painter’s brush, slowly reveal the image. Layer upon layer of fabric, stitched into place using a variety of colors and textures, brings the piece to life. In each piece I create, my hope is to evoke the kind of pleasure and delight of childhood, when life is simple, sweet, and full of endless possibilities. For me, place is more about embodying the essence and the emotionally salient aspects of a location rather than ensuring physical accuracy. I strive to make my pieces LOOK the way you FEEL when you’re at a place. A touch of whimsy here and there allows me to create a place people happily recognize and relate to without re-creating it’s precisely. I hope my art will make you smile each time you look at it.”

The Hallway Gallery will feature “IGNITE HIGH POINT: Updated”. This exhibit will serve as a progress report on new projects that are creating a vibrant center city here in High Point.
And once again, the Kaleidoscope Youth Gallery will host the Annual TAG High School Art Exhibition. Participating schools include Dudley High School, Grimsley High School, High Point Christian Academy, Doris Henderson Newcomers School, Southern Guilford High School, Weaver Academy, Wesleyan Christian Academy, and Westchester Country Day School.
Theatre Art Galleries is located in downtown High Point at 220 E. Commerce Ave. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 12:00-5:00 p.m. For more information contact the TAG office at 336-887-2137 or visit www.tagart.org."

"The High Point Convention & Visitors Bureau has launched a new website that’s chock full of useful information. The site, which can be found at www.highpoint.org, was created to meet the special needs of meeting planners, sports promoters, furniture shoppers and High Point residents as a great place to live.

“Because of the extended reach of our Regional Visitors Center, we have information about High Point as well as attractions ranging from vineyard tours in the mountains, to happenings at the North Carolina Zoo, and festivals at Old Salem. The list of major attractions covers a 90-mile radius,” says Tim Mabe, president and CEO of the High Point CVB. “The site purposefully offers information for everyone from visitors coming to High Point for a few days to people who live in High Point who are looking for something to do here at home.”

New features include sections for:

·         Furniture Shoppers – Advice about how to shop by style, product and manufacturer along with details about how to connect with local interior designers and the services they offer. There is a complete listing of all 40 furniture stores and their websites including companies that can help plan a visit; some can offer access into some showrooms that are otherwise not accessible to the public. There is also a handy Furniture Buying Tips checklist.

·         Passport to Savings – Downloadable coupons for local restaurants, retail stores, and furniture attractions.

·         Meeting Planners – Insight into a variety of facilities offered in High Point with details about extra services that are available.  The High Point CVB will walk hand-in-hand with all meeting planners from beginning to end to ensure that they have a positive experience while in High Point. A request for proposal (RFP) form is also offered.

“The website is designed to be intuitive and easy to navigate. Resources on the new website provide details for the local community to engage in what is right here in their backyard,” says Mabe. “The same reasons why High Point is a great place to live also make it a great place to visit.”

Other areas of interest on the site include an expanded Preferred Member program, highlighting local businesses that are committed to providing a high level of quality and service, visible partnerships with facilities across the region such as Triad Stage, and details about the High Point CVB’s Spotlight on Saturday events.

“Videos on the website provide additional insight, including a welcome video from High Point University President Nido Qubein,” Mabe says. “Other videos present interior design services, a look at local veterans’ memorials and African American history. Visitors can even download a printable brochure to use on the go.”

“WASTE MATTERS: An Artful Matter of Waste”… An Environmental Art Installation at the High Point Public Library.

"Theatre Art Galleries announces the opening of a community sponsored environmental art installation at the High Point Public Library titled, “WASTE MATTERS: An Artful Matter of Waste.”  The installation will be on view from November 8, 2014 - January 3, 2015.  This installation is made possible by a partnership between Theatre Art Galleries, the High Point Public Library, the City of High Point, the High Point Community Foundation, and High Point University. A Preview Opening Reception for TAG members will take place on Friday, November 7th from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm at the library. A Public Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, November 8th from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Join the festivities with a children’s art project on Saturday as well from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. The guest artist, Bryant Holsenbeck, will give an Artist’s Talk on Saturday at 2:00 pm. There will be music and refreshments. Free and open to the public. Location:  High Point Public Library, 901 N. Main St.
Bryant Holsenbeck is an environmental artist who makes large-scale installations that document the waste stream in our society.  During the first week in November, she will create a large scale-exhibition in the High Point Public Library using discarded water bottles. With the help of the larger community, Ms. Holsenbeck will create a sculptural installation that references the natural world and surprises us all. She is a community artist who likes to work with groups of people to make large-scale installations using the everyday “stuff” of our society.
She states, “For over a decade now, I have been documenting the “stuff” of our society that we use once and throw away. Americans continue to create more garbage, per capita, than any other culture, yet we are blind to our waste. I believe this is a function of our wealth, and the vastness of our country. We have the room to hide our waste, and the money to make more. I collect many things, among them, bottle caps, credit cards, plastic bags, straws and lids, beach plastic and chop sticks. I use these everyday items to make work, which transforms the objects and surprises us. I am an environmentalist, receiving great joy from the natural world. This makes me aware of how we take what we have for granted. We are used to using “stuff” once and then throwing it away. We may throw it away, but my work makes me aware of its continual impact.”
Bryant Holsenbeck began her art career as a basket maker and has evolved into an environmental artist. She has shown her work and taught throughout the United States. She has been the recipient of 2 North Carolina Arts Council Fellowships, a Project Grant and an NEA Arts and Learning Grant that she worked on in collaboration with the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission. She is currently attempting to live one year without disposable plastic and writing a blog about it titled “THE LAST STRAW: A RELUCTANT YEAR WITHOUT DISPOSABLE PLASTIC”. She is also an independent studio artist who makes books, birds, and sculptures out of recycled materials.
She will be teaching a 2 session Animal Workshop for Adults at Theatre Art Galleries on October 28th and 30th from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. During the 2 sessions, each participant will design and craft an animal of their choosing using wire, scraps of material, yarn, and plastic bags. The workshop fee is $65 for TAG members and $75 for Non-members. Visit www.tagart.org to register.

Theatre Art Galleries is located in downtown High Point at 220 E. Commerce Ave. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 12:00-5:00 p.m. For more information contact the TAG office at 336-887-2137 or visit www.tagart.org."
