Triad Goodwill CEO Gorham to Retire after 33 years

Richard J. Gorham
"GREENSBORO, NC – The Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina, Inc. (Triad Goodwill) announces that Richard J. Gorham has chosen to retire as CEO effective January 6, 2017.   The executive board will conduct a search for the next CEO with Goodwill Industries International, Inc.

“Richard has been an outstanding leader and CEO.  His unique combination of strategic and operating skills, plus his commitment to our mission, employees, customers and stakeholders has redefined Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina and led to an entirely new and better way of serving the communities in which it operates,” said Charles E. Judy, Jr., chairman of the board for Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina, Inc.

Under Gorham’s leadership, Triad Goodwill has become a leader within the Goodwill movement. When he first came on board in 1983, the organization was operating in the red and serving only a handful of people. Gorham built the organization into what it is today, employing more than 350 people, providing services to 16,954 people last year, and pumping nearly $60 million dollars back into the local economy.

For the past 15 years, Triad Goodwill has been recognized for operating in the top 10 of the 165 autonomous Goodwill organizations across North America. This ranking is measured per capita with operational capacities in several key categories including mission outcomes, retail sales, donation procurement, and employee tenure, to name a few.

“The succession plan we have in place will keep Triad Goodwill operating smoothly so it can continue its work as the recognized leader for helping people develop the work skills necessary to successfully integrate into the competitive labor market,” said Chairman Judy.

The entire Board of Directors, as well as everyone in the Triad Goodwill family, extends their sincerest thanks for his service, his leadership and his commitment to the organization and its people.

About Triad Goodwill:

BioSolar Adds N.C. A&T Engineering Team to Strengthen Efforts to Increase Capacity and Reduce Cost of Lithium-ion Batteries

"BioSolar, Inc., a developer of breakthrough energy storage technology and materials, has entered into a new sponsored research agreement with North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University to strengthen the engineering development efforts of its battery technology. The company’s goal is to increase the capacity and reduce the cost of lithium-ion batteries.

Dr. Sung-Jin Cho, assistant professor in the Department of Nanoengineering at North Carolina A&T State University, will be the lead investigator of the newly initiated sponsored research. Cho also serves as Director of Nano Energy Laboratory, a role he has held since August 2014. Prior to his current position, Cho was a technical lead at Johnson Controls Inc., Battery Technology Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from 2008 to 2014. He led the United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) program to design and evaluate battery material and lithium-ion cell engineering for automotive application for over six years. Prior to pursuing his Ph.D. in the U.S., Cho worked on lithium-ion battery technology development in Korea, and held a number of positions at LG. His research encompasses fundamental materials studies such as catastrophic failure mechanism study, synthesis and physical characterization, as well as device and system design and fabrication.

This agreement represents a natural progression from the scientific development phase represented by the company’s existing sponsored research program at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), now scheduled to conclude in October 2016. In place since 2014, this agreement and subsequent scientific efforts have resulted in the creation of innovative intellectual properties that form the basis of BioSolar’s critical core technologies. The company currently co-owns two patent-applications for a supercapacitor technology and its super cathode technology with UCSB.

“We are excited to have Dr. Cho lead our new engineering and commercialization program at North Carolina A&T State University,” said Dr. David Lee, CEO of BioSolar. “His experience in developing high energy lithium batteries and process development draws many parallels to what we are seeking to build upon. We believe this new effort will positively complement our previous activities at UCSB, bringing us one step closer to achieving our corporate objectives and ultimately realizing value on behalf of our shareholders.”

BioSolar is developing a breakthrough technology to double the storage capacity, lower the cost and extend the life of lithium-ion batteries. A battery contains two major parts, a cathode and an anode, that function together as the positive and negative sides. Inspired by nature, BioSolar is developing a novel cathode based on inexpensive conductive polymers and organic materials that can fully utilize the storage capacity of conventional anodes. Founded with the vision of developing breakthrough energy technologies, BioSolar's previous successes include the world's first UL approved bio-based back sheet for use in solar panels.

GCS and Amplify Agree to Part Ways

GCS will begin looking for a new
tablet provider for 2016-17 school year

Greensboro, N.C. – Guilford County Schools and Amplify, Inc., have agreed to part ways by the end of this school year, according to an agreement approved by the school board this evening (Dec. 17).

The new deal allows both parties to exit the current agreement about two years early without incurring any penalties. It also frees GCS from any payment this school year, a savings of about $3.8 million in federal grant expenditures. The district will use the funds to keep the one-to-one program operating at all middle schools through the 2017-18 school year.

The district plans to issue a request for proposals for a new tablet supplier within the next two weeks. The goal is to have a new vendor on board this spring, with new devices in classrooms when school resumes next fall.

Rather than pursue an all-in-one solution as it did with Amplify, GCS plans to separate the device bid from any digital content, software and management services. The district also plans to purchase the devices rather than access them through a service contract.

“We’ve learned a lot of valuable lessons along the way and there’s more on the market now we can take advantage of than there was several years ago,” says Terrence Young, chief information officer. “Our goals remain the same: finding new and better ways of engaging and challenging students more actively in their own learning.”

Young said the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) also is providing more digital resources to public schools, reducing the need for some services previously supplied to GCS by Amplify.

District officials anticipate staggering the re-start in middle schools next fall. Called Personalized Achievement Curriculum and Environment (PACE), the initiative is part of a $35 million grant GCS received from the U.S. Department of Education in 2013 following a national competition in 2012.

“Technology is a necessary tool in classrooms today, and it’s important that all students have access to digital tools and resources, especially in a district like GCS where so many students may not have access at home,” says Robin Britt, director of instructional technology.

While technology puts new and better tools and resources into classrooms, the key to success isn’t the technology but the teachers and the students, according to Britt.

“Personalizing learning is about teachers and students working together to meet each student’s unique learning needs,” says Britt. “Technology and digital content are amazingly helpful, but are always secondary to the talents of our teachers and the growth of students as they learn to work more independently.  We’ve seen real magic for kids occur in our classrooms when all of these factors interact in new and powerful ways.”

GCS will start shipping its current tablets back to Amplify in May of 2016 when state testing begins. Amplify was sold by News Corp. in September, 2015.

“The federal grant we received was considered experimental for a reason,” noted Young. “While things clearly didn’t go as smoothly as we would have liked the first year, a lot of great work has been accomplished since then and our students have benefited as a result.”

About Guilford County Schools

Guilford County Schools, the third largest school district in North Carolina, serves nearly 72,000 K-12 students at 127 schools. Guilford County is also a Say Yes to Education community, giving eligible GCS graduates the opportunity to apply for last-dollar tuition scholarships to attend any 2- or 4-year public institution in North Carolina. Combining choices to meet the individual educational needs for a culturally diverse citizenship and new opportunities makes our families say, “GCS, Yes!” For more information, visit the district’s website at www.gcsnc.com."

Price of Homes Sold Increase Almost 9% in Guilford County

Greensboro, NC – The seasonally adjusted average home price in Guilford County in October 2014 was $183,208, an 8.6% increase over October 2013’s average of $168,652 according to monthly figures prepared by Dr. Donald Jud of Jud & Associates for the Greensboro Regional REALTORS® Association.  Existing home prices in this cycle bottomed in January 2012 and have since risen 20.8%.

In October 2014, the Time on Market (TOM) was 88.8 days, 4.4% less than it was in October 2013.  Over the past 12 months the TOM has declined and the spread, which shows the ratio of selling to listing prices, has risen, indicating less discounting in the market.

Sales of existing, single-family homes in Guilford County increased during last month compared to the previous month.  A total of 423 units sold in Guilford County in October 2014 and 414 sold in September 2014.  The number sold was higher by 2.1% compared to the level of sales recorded in September 2014, and was 4.1% above the number sold during October one year ago.

The inventory/sales ratio, which indicates the number of months to clear the current inventory of homes on the market, was 6.1 months, 3.2% less than the previous month.

“We have had ten months of price increases since January 2014 and seven months of quantity gains since April 2014 indicating a stable market,” said Marian Stafford, president of Greensboro Regional REALTORS® Association. “Interest rates are at record lows and more product is coming on the market since sellers are listing their homes as prices are rising. Whether buying or selling, work with a Greensboro REALTOR® who can help you navigate the process.”

The Greensboro Regional REALTORS® Association, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support its members in their business pursuits by promoting the highest professional ethics and being the primary provider for quality services, education and real estate information in the market area."
